This Week at the Durham Farmers Market
Happy Mothers/Graduation Day!
Every year, on this weekend, the Market is usually teaming with Peonies. Like lots of other crops this spring, the cool weather has slowed them down just a bit. But, the peony bush outside my front door is just about to bloom and I saw a few of them at Market on Wednesday. When I was little, I used to go out to the garden on Mothers Day and pick huge bouquet of peonies for my mama, so the mothers day and peonies have always been synonymous to me. If you are looking for them, I suggest that you get to Market extra early. Tomorrow morning, there will be all kinds of flowers, presents, treats, and yummy meals you can create for the special mom or graduate in your life!
Kids Tomato Seedling Day & Storytelling - TOMORROW!
As a special treat for the kids (and moms) at the Market tomorrow, we will be having our Kids Tomato Seedling Giveaway! As you probably know, a bunch of our farmers grow lots of tomato seedlings. Some of them have generously donated some to give to the kids that come to the Market. Teaching kids where food comes from and how to grow it is such a rewarding thing, so we wanted to help make it easy to do!
Tomorrow morning, kids can stop by and see the Durham County Master Gardeners in their tent on the Market lawn and pick up a tomato seedling and growing information. Then stop by and listen to a story from our wonderful storyteller friend Cynthia Raxter, also on the lawn! Cynthia will be telling stories about tomatoes and growing up on a farm in western North Carolina. Cynthia's stories are great for kids, but I also recommend that grown ups stop by for a listen too, her stories are really entertaining and fun to listen to!
CONGRATULATIONS to Shanna Bierman, the Market's Assistant Manager, she is graduating from Nursing School the weekend!
See you at the Market, bright and early!!
