This Week At the Durham Farmers' Market Wednesday Market
WHAT'S NEW AT MARKET?
Over the last week, I've seen a few things come to the Market in small quantities. I've seen fennel, broccoli raab, and radicchio on several tables. This weekend, I saw 2 artichokes, a handful of fava beans and a few bunches of rhubarb! These small quantities are a sign that more is growing in the sun warmed fields and soon to be on the way to Market.
This spring has been unusually cool and wet. These factors have meant that crops that are usually plentiful at this time of the season are slowly creeping into market this year. It is not just the cool temperatures of the past month that have contributed to slow crop growth. The wet weather of February and March kept farmers out of their fields during the critical times when they needed to prepare the ground for planting and start planting seeds and seedlings. So, some crops got into the ground later than normal and the cool weather has kept them growing slowly. Most crops are coming in to market a little bit later than normal. But, if the cool weather continues, that may mean that some ephemeral spring crops, strawberries and sugar snap peas for example, may stick around for longer than usual.
These are the joys and the risks of farming! With every season, there are a different set of factors that farmers have to take into account. While crops are coming in at a different rate than in past seasons, the weather has been glorious and comfortable and as an added bonus, ponds and streams used for irrigation are getting full for later use. So, really, there isn't much to complain about, it is just a different season.
TOMORROW AT MARKET
Anne Everitt, of Triangle Food Fight, will be back at Market tomorrow doing another Quick Dinner From the Market cooking demonstration! Tomorrow, starting around 3:30, she'll demonstrate how to make Mexican Confetti Grain Salad, which is a filling salad made with quinoa or rice and lots of fresh vegetables. Tastes and recipes will be available.
See you at the market!
