Durham Youth Job Fair & Career Expo Receives Overwhelming Response

Due to an overwhelming response from youth and their parents interested in employment this summer, the City of Durham is requesting that all potential applicants contact the City’s Office on Youth for more information – not the individual employers participating in next week’s Summer Youth Work Program Job Fair & Career Expo.

According to Kim Moss, assistant youth services coordinator with the City’s Office on Youth, information and eligibility requirements for all of the available positions is readily available on the City’s website. “Youth and their parents should check our webpage to find out all of the information they will for next week’s job fair. Each position available has specific requirements for eligibility, including some with minimum age requirements, and our webpage has all of this information for all of our participating employers,” Moss said. “Our partners are receiving calls directly from interested youth and their parents and we don’t want to be disruptive to their daily operations. Our webpage has everything that youth and their parents need to prepare for the job fair. Applicants may also call our office directly and we will be happy to provide information and specific details on the hiring requirements for each position that is available.”

Each year, Mayor William V. “Bill” Bell and the City of Durham’s Office on Youth host the Mayor's Summer Youth Work Program to offer Durham youth ages 14 to 21 the opportunity to gain work experience and develop skills while connecting with City and County governments and local employers. Approximately 300 summer employment opportunities will be available this year. Participants will begin work on Monday, June 13 and work until Friday, August 12.

This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holton Career & Resource Center, located at 401 N. Driver Street, Durham.

According to Moss, potential youth applicants should visit the City’s website at www.DurhamNC.gov/mayor/youth_program.cfm to download an application as well as review the job listings and criteria needed to ensure eligibility for each position. There will also be an interview process.
