Tree lovers in Durham have one more thing to be proud about thanks to a recent award naming the City of Durham a “Tree City USA” for the 27th year because of its commitment to urban forestry. Durham is one of only 77 “Tree Cities” in North Carolina.
The Tree City USA® Program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in more than 135 million American cities.

In order to receive the “Tree City USA” recognition, the City’s Urban Forestry Division in the General Services Department must meet four standards, including a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
