When you walk your dog, cat, rabbit or ferret, you probably don't think that by doing that same walk, you could help his or her furry friends in Durham.
The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) announces the 2013 Walk for the Animals will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 on Duke University’s East Campus. The event raises funds and awareness for the homeless and neglected pets throughout our community with a 1.5 mile charity walk and a fundraising goal of $100,000.
APS expects 1,000 attendees to participate in this year’s Walk for the Animals. Proceeds raised at the event will benefit APS and its work caring for the nearly 7,000 animals that rely on the services of the Durham County Animal Shelter each year.
About the Walk for the Animals
The Walk for the Animals was first held in 2000 to raise money for the Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS). Since then, the Walk has become a favorite for animal lovers across the triangle, combining rescue groups, vendors, contests, agility/flyball/K-9 demonstrations and children’s activities with a worthwhile cause — helping abused and neglected pets throughout the community to receive the care they need and to find loving homes.
Participants can register as individuals or recruit their friends, family and co-workers to join as part of a team. Registrations and donations can be made online.
About the APS
Founded in 1970, the mission of the Animal Protection Society of Durham is to educate the public about the humane care, treatment and well-being of all animals; to help stop pet overpopulation through the promotion of spay/neuter programs; and to find suitable adoptive homes for the animals in our care. Since taking over management of the Durham County Animal Shelter in 1990, the Animal Protection Society has provided food, shelter and medical attention to nearly 7,000 stray, surrendered or abused animals each year. The APS of Durham is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity, and contributions are tax deductible according to IRS rules and regulations. For more information, visit their website.
